The year is winding down, and the ramp up for Christmas and the New Year is on! If you’re feeling overwhelmed already, you aren’t alone! According to a study by the APA, most Americans find their stress levels increase during the holiday period, starting mid-November. Whether it’s never ending to-do lists, holiday shopping, or planning travel, remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s important to carve out some time, even just a few minutes, to recharge and relax.
Here are some important reminders to help keep you sane and less stressed this season from the National Alliance on Mental Illness: 1. Set Reasonable Expectations: check in with yourself about managing high hopes or unrealistic expectations of yourself or others. 2. Know & Respect Your Limits: it’s ok to say no! 3. Avoid Known Triggers: don’t feel guilty over removing yourself from people, settings, or activities that cause pain or stress.. 4. Give Back: if your typical holiday plans are a known trigger or cause stress/drama, make new traditions! One way to feel good and create new positive memories can involve giving back to your community, such as volunteering, or even putting together care packages for care facilities or animal shelters. 5. Decorate for Comfort: Decorating can be overwhelming, but focus on items, colors, etc that bring you joy. As much as I love real Christmas trees, the upkeep doesn’t work for my small house, so I found a small, artificial pencil tree that beautifully fits my space and isn’t tedious to put up. 6. Be Extra Giving to Yourself: Have grace for yourself as you navigate the season, and gift yourself treats to brighten those stressful days - whether it’s a warm cup of tea on a chilly morning, or taking a few minutes before bed to light a candle, cuddle under a blanket and watch your favorite movie.
