Making it Work

When our physical studio location closed due to Covid, we discovered there were great benefits to keep our classes going and transitioning to an online studio format. But for all the conveniences, I know it can be hard to stay motivated and get the most out of your online classes.
Here are 4 easy ideas to make virtual fitness classes work for you:
  1. Create a space in your home to take class. It doesn’t have to be large, but as long as you can open a yoga mat and have space to move, you’re good! This could be the middle of your living room or a corner of your bedroom, but keep your mat/equipment in view. If you see your mat in the corner, you’re more likely to remember to make time for class. Also, make it inviting! Dim your lights for a relaxing yoga session, light some candles, and make your little fitness corner a space you want to visit each day.
  2. Stick to the routine. Whether you are joining a livestream or watching a recorded video, try to create a consistent routine for the best results. Videos on demand work great for a busy schedule, but not if you don’t carve out the time to actually do them. Pick a time that works for you. Want to rewind before bed? Look for yoga and stretching specifically. Need a jolt of energy mid-afternoon? Try some cardio or bellydance drills. Set an alert on your phone to remind you until it becomes a habit. No time, you say? Think honestly about how much time you spend binging Netflix or scrolling through social media. Even if you have 5-10 minutes a day, consider spending that time doing something good for yourself and moving. If you can’t do a full hour class, break it up by watching sections of a class video. 5 minutes of abs/core or down dog variations can leave you refreshed and renewed.
  3. Limit Distractions. Just because the class is virtual, stay checked in. Let friends/family know that you need time for yourself without interruption. Turn your phone on silent, and consider wearing headphones to focus on the class audio.
  4. Get engaged! Take advantage of opportunities to interact with the instructor or other class participants. Join the livestream and turn your camera on to get feedback. Or participate in the class chats or social media to ask questions and get motivation to keep you going.
As an instructor, I thrive on interacting with my clients. I love seeing your faces in class, and my goal is always to have you succeed, whether you want to learn dance, get a good workout, or just take time out of your day to treat yourself. I’d love to hear your thoughts on any successes or challenges you’ve had with online classes!
